Late-autumn mist settles over Sylhet's haor in the afternoons

Before autumn is out, a light mist is gathering over Sylhet's haor wetlands each afternoon; Prothom Alo photographer Anis Mahmud pictured ducks, fishers and people heading home.

It is still autumn on the calendar, but on the edge of Sylhet's haor wetlands the afternoons already feel like the season that follows. A thin layer of mist lies over the distant water, the sun fades behind it and a grey light spreads across the landscape.

Prothom Alo photographer Anis Mahmud captured those afternoons: a flock of ducks swimming on the haor while the horizon dissolves into haze, and local people walking home along misty paths at its edge.

Some are still busy fishing. As the daylight goes, people and cattle make their way back from the haor and the mist thickens until the far water blurs out of sight.

This turn of the season matters to haor farmers and fishers too: as the water starts to recede, fishing picks up and preparations begin for the Boro rice season.
