The ripe mango season is under way, and now is the time to eat mangoes to your heart's content. But many people wish they could eat mangoes for longer, or that the season lasted a little longer.
Some of them store mangoes in the fridge hoping to enjoy them for a long time. But mangoes kept frozen for too long may no longer be fit to eat after a certain point, so everyone should be careful when storing them.
Why mangoes spoil
The mango is one of the fruits that spoils fastest, so if you want to keep mangoes for a long time you must follow the right method. Mangoes can be stored both at room temperature and in a refrigerator.
Keeping all their nutritional value while storing them is difficult, though. Kept at room temperature for long, mangoes begin to rot, and their taste may turn from sweet to sour or bitter.
Sometimes the skin looks fine while the fruit has gone bad inside. Cut such a mango and you will see the flesh turning black. Such mangoes must be thrown away immediately.
Freezing them the right way
Refrigeration is more effective than storing mangoes at room temperature. It protects them from rotting for longer, which means you can keep mangoes in the fridge and eat them for a long time.
Keep mangoes at room temperature until they are fully ripe and ready to eat. Then cut the ripe mangoes into pieces or small cubes, put them in a zip-lock bag and store them in the refrigerator.
After putting the mangoes in the zip-lock bag, press the air out of it. Store the bag in an empty spot in the fridge and do not put anything on top of it.
Make sure the temperature is kept below 18 degrees Celsius; mangoes must be stored at this temperature to keep their best quality. Following these rules, you can store frozen mangoes for up to six months.
