Through rooftop farming, Siddiqa Begum of Rajabazar in the capital is enjoying a taste of rural life. Over ten years on top of a five-storey building, she has built an abundance of fruit and crops.
A village childhood
Having spent her childhood in a village, she has felt a pull towards farming all her life. She has been able to fulfil that wish on the 2,000 square foot roof of her own home, which now meets many of her needs.
Fully organic
Fruit and vegetables on her roof are grown 100 per cent organically. On one side of the roof are turkeys, chickens and pigeons. Her son started keeping birds as a hobby but has begun earning a commercial profit.
A family's favourite place
Her greatest achievement is that she has gradually made every member of the family fond of rooftop farming, and the roof has become everyone's favourite place.
