Bayezid Alam Bappi, a farm entrepreneur from Keowa Paschim Khanda village in Sreepur municipality, Gazipur, has planted about 15,000 banana plants on 15 bigha of land. He hopes the garden will earn him Tk 20 lakh this year after costs.
Bappi once looked after his father's business. He began by growing dragon fruit in plastic drums on the roof of his house. Encouraged by the harvest, he planted dragon fruit on three bigha of his father's fallow land, then expanded the orchard and added foreign grape varieties.
Two and a half years ago, on the advice of the local agriculture office, he turned to bananas. The first year brought Tk 4 lakh after all costs, and the second about Tk 10 lakh. This season he has extended the crop to 15 bigha.
His garden holds the Rangin Sagar and Sabri varieties and the Ente banana used as a vegetable. The report says Rangin Sagar is doing best. Bappi plans to grow more varieties on a larger scale.
Sreepur upazila agriculture officer Sumaiya Sultana Bonna said her office advises him on technical and other matters. She said others who have seen his results are contacting the agriculture office about growing bananas.
