In a corner of the National Parliament grounds, a small plot has become a rich garden of fruit and vegetables. Parliament whip Mahbub Ara Gini built the garden of at least sixty kinds of greens, vegetables and fruit with her own hands, and it has become an example for other MPs.
Unused land put to work
The National Parliament stands on 215 acres, surrounded by beautiful gardens, with open fields and unused areas inside. The whip transformed one such piece with beauty and crops.
She said when she told the Speaker, he and others encouraged her, saying the land was lying idle and a vegetable garden was a good idea; word reached the Prime Minister, who also encouraged her.
Toxin-free produce
The garden is also a model of toxin-free vegetable production. The whip said organic fertiliser and pesticides are used. Horticulture experts help look after it, along with a fruit development project, whose director Mehedi Masud said 52 kinds of vegetables and fruit have been grown.
The initiative has caught other MPs' attention, and the attractive garden is becoming a small agro-tourism spot.
