Bread and biscuits made in filth beside a cattle farm: Natore bakery fined Tk 2 lakh

A pure food court found the factory of Natore town's well-known Mouchak bakery making undated bread, biscuits and chanachur in dirty conditions beside a cattle farm, and fined the owner Tk 2 lakh.

At the bakery factory of Mouchak Mishtanna Bhandar in the Amhati area of Natore town, bread, biscuits, chanachur and other foods were being made in dirty conditions beside a cattle farm. The products carried no production or expiry dates.

A pure food court led by Senior Judicial Magistrate Ibrahim Ali raided the factory on the evening of Saturday, 17 October, together with the district consumer rights officer, the food safety authority and a sanitary inspector.

The court found food being made beside a cattle farm run by the same business, and products stored without production or expiry labels. The court's clerk, Manik Chandra, said it was impossible to tell the bakery from the farm, and raw materials were found stale, rotten and unhygienic. Although the rules require labels at the time of production, labels were being put on only when the goods were sent to shops.

The owner, Arif Hossain, admitted the charges. He was detained and fined Tk 2 lakh on the spot, or two months in jail in default, and was released after paying the fine.
