An established businessman has built a rich mango orchard in Madhaisur, a remote village in Lohajang, Munshiganj. He set it up to stay connected with his ancestral home and to supply his family with pure fruit, and this year the orchard is full of mangoes.
Planted as a hobby in 2012
In 2012, businessman Abul Kalam Azad planted a mango orchard on three and a half bighas of his ancestral land in Madhaisur, almost as a hobby. His aim was to visit the village regularly from Dhaka and spend pleasant time among fruit and flowers. Within four years, the orchard has not only served that purpose but is now full of mangoes of many varieties.
He has learned that adding sound planning to a hobby ensures success.
A family project
His younger brother, Nuruzzaman, looks after the orchard, and it has become a pleasant and attractive place for the rest of the family too. During Ramadan, the family's daily mango needs are met from their own orchard, an example others could follow.
