Sweet malta is now growing in Chapainawabganj, the mango district. Covering the dryness of the Barind land with green, driver Motiur Rahman has made a striking success of this new fruit, and his integrated orchard has become a source of pride for the district.
Heavy with fruit
The sweet BARI Malta-1 variety now grows in many parts of the country, but trees full of attractive yellow, juicy fruit are something of a new surprise. On once-barren land in Gachhtara village, Motiur's 200 malta trees are bending under hundreds of fruits.
There is no question about the sweetness. Motiur claims his orchard's malta is the best, and experts do not disagree.
Fruit bagging
The secret behind the colour is fruit bagging. Understanding market demand, Motiur is keen to use technology. His integrated orchard, in several plots, covers 61 bighas, growing guava, pomegranate, mango and other fruit, and he has also set up a nursery.
The farming success of Motiur, once very poor, is a great source of pride for local people.
