The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection fined three businesses in Dhaka a total of Tk 150,000 on Monday (26 October) for keeping loose edible oil in dirty drums and selling soybean and palm oil without labels. The drives in Shah Ali, Mirpur-1 and Kalyanpur's Natun Bazar collected the fines on the spot.

M/s New Ahmed Traders in Shah Ali Market was fined Tk 70,000 for storing loose oil in filthy, unhygienic drums. New Howlader Traders in the same market paid Tk 50,000 for keeping unlabelled loose soybean and palm oil in unhygienic drums, and M/s Hashem General Store at Kalyanpur's Natun Bazar paid Tk 30,000 for the same offence.

The drive was run under an industries ministry project to digitise the monitoring of edible oil fortification and strengthen quality control and capacity. It was led by Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, assistant director of the directorate's Dhaka district office, and Tahmina Begum, assistant director at its head office.

Representatives of the industries ministry, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, the Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC) and the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) took part.

Traders were told not to store or sell loose oil in unhygienic or unsafe containers and to display labels with the required information. Leaflets on consumer rights law were handed to shoppers, who were urged to complain to the directorate if cheated.

The directorate said such monitoring will continue to keep markets orderly, prices fair and food safe.
