Scientists are playing an important part in taking the country's livestock sector forward through research and innovation, fisheries, livestock and agriculture minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid has said.

Their innovations and research achievements will be properly recognised, the minister said.

He was speaking as chair at the 49th meeting of the governing board of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), held on Tuesday morning at the conference room of the fisheries and livestock ministry.

There is no alternative to research if the sector is to raise productivity, prevent disease, develop better breeds, produce safe animal protein and build export capacity, the minister said.

He urged that research be made more productive and more practical, so that farmers and entrepreneurs feel the benefit directly.

The number of cattle and poultry farms in the country keeps rising, but carrying breed improvement and disease control research out to the field remains the main challenge.
