Donations left over almost six years in the boxes of Kishoreganj's historic Pagla Mosque have been tallied at 1,044 bhori of gold jewellery and 1,088 bhori of silver, according to the district administration on Monday evening (12 October), Banglanews24's Kishoreganj correspondent reports.
Counting began at about 9:45 in the morning in the deputy commissioner's conference room. Deputy commissioner Sohana Nasrin said nine medium plastic containers and six sealed envelopes kept in the treasury were opened. The gold and silver will be weighed, tested for carat and later auctioned, and the foreign currency cashed at Bangladesh Bank's current exchange rates. Foreign currency was still being counted in the evening; Mohammad Haresi, an AGM of Rupali Bank, said it might take until 8pm.
A nine-member subcommittee led by the additional district magistrate is overseeing the work, helped by three executive magistrates, police, Ansar, bank officials and goldsmiths; ten members of the district jewellers' association weighed the gold and silver. The district council administrator, additional deputy commissioners and a deputy director of the Local Government Division attended.
At the previous auction, on 11 March 2020, 415 bhori and 1 ana of gold and 164 bhori of silver from the boxes fetched Tk 11,504,100, and the foreign currency was cashed for Tk 127,651.
The boxes were last opened on 27 June this year. Since the mosque launched its own website it has also received Tk 3,932,106 in donations through mobile banking, the report says.
