Many people throw away the seeds after eating jackfruit, but the seeds are far from waste. They are highly nutritious, and jackfruit seeds help keep the gut healthy.

The seeds can also be made into excellent dishes. You can cook dal with them, and jackfruit seed bharta is a favourite of many. Here are recipes for both.

Jackfruit seed dal

Ingredients:

  • Split pea (motor) dal, 150 g
  • Drumstick (data), cut into pieces, 250 g
  • Jackfruit seeds, cut into pieces, 10-12
  • Chopped green chillies, 2
  • Whole green chillies, 2
  • Turmeric powder, 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Black cumin (kalo jira), 1/4 teaspoon
  • Dried chilli, 1

First wash the dal well and soak it in water. Meanwhile, cut the drumsticks and set them aside. Now put the jackfruit seeds and drumsticks in a pressure cooker with water and salt. They will be cooked after one whistle.

Heat 2 spoons of oil in a pan and temper with the dried chilli and black cumin. Then add the boiled dal, green chillies and turmeric powder and cook until quite thick, then take it off the heat. It tastes great with hot rice or roti.
