Sales of all the major chemical fertilisers in India, urea, di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), muriate of potash (MOP), NPK complexes and single super phosphate (SSP), declined in the first half of the 2026-27 financial year, Rural Voice reported, citing information from sources. Domestic urea production rose, output of the other fertilisers fell, and imports of urea and MOP climbed by more than 40 percent.
Urea sales from April to September came to 18.521 million tonnes, 4.1 percent less than the 19.307 million tonnes a year earlier. DAP sales slipped 0.6 percent to 4.364 million tonnes, MOP fell 11.7 percent to 965,800 tonnes, NPK dropped 22.2 percent to 6.007 million tonnes and SSP eased 1.4 percent to 2.828 million tonnes.
On the production side, urea output rose 4.3 percent to 15.064 million tonnes from 14.444 million, while DAP was almost unchanged at 1.994 million tonnes. NPK production fell sharply, by 35.5 percent to 3.822 million tonnes from 5.928 million, and SSP output fell 10.4 percent to 2.631 million tonnes.
India imported 5.589 million tonnes of urea in the half-year, up 40.5 percent, and 1.679 million tonnes of MOP, up 41 percent. DAP imports fell 11.2 percent to 3.399 million tonnes and NPK imports 31.4 percent to 1.386 million tonnes.
September alone looked different. Urea sales rose 8 percent year on year to 2.705 million tonnes and DAP 6.9 percent to 983,600 tonnes, while NPK sales fell 39.3 percent to 676,100 tonnes. Urea imports in the month dropped 56.6 percent to 843,000 tonnes from 1.944 million tonnes in September 2025, while DAP imports rose 13.3 percent to 998,000 tonnes and MOP 12.9 percent to 446,000 tonnes. Production in September was 2.525 million tonnes of urea, 371,000 tonnes of DAP, 599,200 tonnes of NPK and 397,500 tonnes of SSP.
