The historic Kazakh city of Turkistan has been named cultural capital of the Islamic world for 2027. Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced it on social media. Each year the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) gives the title to one or more cities on the strength of their history and heritage.
Kazakhstan is planning a large programme of international events for the year. They include an international forum on literature and linguistics, to be named after the Sufi master and Islamic thinker Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, and a conference of museum professionals from across the Turkic and Islamic world.
At the 13th summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), President Tokayev had stressed the importance of stronger cultural and humanitarian ties among Turkic nations.
Mecca became the first cultural capital of the Muslim world in 2005. Later holders include Aleppo, Tashkent, Damascus, Kairouan, Dushanbe, Tlemcen, Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, Medina, Sharjah, Almaty, Kuwait, Amman, Nakhchivan, Tunis, Bukhara, Doha, Cairo, Nouakchott, Shusha, Samarkand and Baghdad.
