Having lost their crops to flash floods, people of the haor now face a severe shortage of animal feed. They fear the next three months will be desperate for their livestock and are asking for fodder support until things return to normal.
Cattle sold or starving
With sudden hardship after the floods, many could not keep their cattle and calves. Those who still have animals face a fodder crisis, and the cattle look like skin and bones.
Straw lost with the rice
In the haor, a large share of livestock feed comes from rice straw. With the paddy submerged this year, animal feed has disappeared along with people's food.
Help from a veterinary university
Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has come forward with quick feed and nutrition support at Ichhagari, Shantiganj, in the middle of Dekhar Haor, Sunamganj. Experts say this new kind of feed quickly restores nutrition and strength, and they have also given some medicines.
The Department of Livestock Services, however, is more worried about the crisis ahead than the present one.
