A workshop on farm mechanisation in Sylhet on Wednesday (14 October) focused on climate-resilient agriculture and wider use of farm machinery in the haor wetlands. It was held in the conference room of the Department of Agricultural Extension's Sylhet regional office, with the department's support and funding from the Nabapallab project run by CARE Bangladesh.

Participants discussed raising the use of farm machines through public-private partnerships, distributing equipment to farmers at a 70 percent subsidy, and spreading machinery suited to the haor.

Making production more modern and efficient and getting suitable technology to farmers were also on the agenda. Speakers stressed coordinated action by government and private organisations to deal with the effects of climate change on haor farming and to increase the use of machines.

The chief guest was Dr Md Mosharraf Hossain, additional director of the Department of Agricultural Extension. Md Moin Uddin Ahmed, programme coordinator of CARE Bangladesh in Dhaka, and Md Rafiqul Islam, regional programme coordinator of the Nabapallab project, spoke as special guests.

Attending were extension department deputy directors, district training officers and upazila agriculture officers from Sylhet and Moulvibazar, the regional radio agriculture officer, a superintending engineer of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the chief scientific officer and an agricultural engineer of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), sub-assistant agriculture officers, agri-entrepreneurs and representatives of farm machinery service providers. Agricare24 carried the report from the Agricultural Information Service, Sylhet.
