A rain tree in Sundarganj becomes home to hundreds of migratory birds

Migratory birds have started arriving in Sundarganj, Gaibandha, ahead of winter. They spend the day feeding in rivers, canals and wetlands and come back at dusk to trees in the town and nearby.

A huge rain tree at College Mor in the municipal town now shelters hundreds of them, white birds with black stripes on the neck that have built rows of nests in the top branches. Thousands more have made temporary homes in bamboo clumps and trees across the upazila.

Md Ashraful Islam, director of a local internet service provider, says the place has been a bird refuge since last year. Each morning the flocks head for the canal behind the upazila parishad and the Teesta river, and they return in the afternoon. Traders in the area are guarding the birds.

S M Madihur Rahman, who came to see them, says protecting migratory birds is everyone's moral duty. Md Abdul Hakim regrets that fewer trees have meant fewer birds in the village fields, and says he was glad to see such a sight in the middle of town after so long.
