A tigress that left the Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal for the forests of Assam was brought back on Tuesday night. Known as the Queen of the Duars, she has been released into an enclosure and is reported healthy, the Kolkata daily Sangbad Pratidin said.

The tigress, brought from Bihar, moved from Buxa to Assam late last month and was being tracked there. With the Assam government's consent, an operation began in the Raimona forest after dark on Tuesday.

It took about three hours, using three kunki elephants and five JCB machines. She was tranquillised and loaded on a vehicle, and a green corridor brought her to Buxa by about 10 pm.

By then she had regained consciousness and made for the water, which reassured the forest staff and vets. "Our queen is very smart. She would come close but would not be caught. At last it has been possible to capture her," said West Bengal forest minister Manoj Oraon. The report is by Suhrid Das.
