Back to the open
Poultry were once raised in the open. The age of commercial poultry brought cage rearing, but for various reasons there is now a worldwide push to raise chickens in open conditions again. Taking this into account, Kamrul has built an open, environment-friendly farm of many breeds.
The flock
The farm has 250 native parent hens, 1,000 turkeys, 1,500 Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red (RIR) chickens, 20 to 25 Silkie chickens and several other uncommon breeds. The farmer says native chickens are profitable.
Not only for profit
He says continuous losses are forcing poultry farmers to think of alternatives. But his initiative is not only about profit: alongside his hobby, he feels a responsibility to protect native breeds.
