Razia Sultana, a young housewife, has drawn attention with an unusual farming venture in Ashulia, Savar. She has built a farm of foreign vegetables on 18 bighas and set an example of careful calculation to make farm investment pay.
Foreign vegetables on local soil
Plots are laid out among housing plots, and foreign vegetables grow fast in small fields. Bangladesh's soil has taken well to broccoli, capsicum, cherry tomato, red beet, celery and Chinese cabbage. Razia has built this 18-bigha farm across several blocks.
She adds new vegetables one after another, based on consumer demand, production cost and profit.
A new profession
After finishing her education and starting family life, Razia took up farming as a profession. Just three years of experience have given her dreams of going much further, and the young farmer is now changing the thinking of other farmers too.
