Dhaka metro stations to get luggage scanners and walk-through metal detectors

Airport-style security checks are coming to Dhaka's metro rail stations. Archway metal detectors will be installed to detect metal objects on passengers as they enter, and luggage scanners to check their bags and belongings.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) invited online tenders for the equipment on 19 October. The tender was issued by Mohammad Asaduzzaman, general manager of the company's store and procurement division, and bidders have been asked to submit through the national e-Government Procurement (e-GP) portal.

Once the system is running, bags will be scanned before passengers enter a station, and the metal detectors will pick up metal objects carried on the body. The aim is to tighten checks and prevent untoward incidents.

How many machines will be bought, which stations get them first and when regular checks will begin have not yet been set.

The same notice also covers an annual maintenance contract for the electrical systems at the MRT Line-6 depot, including the low-voltage system, diesel generators, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS), ventilation and other electrical work. Tender documents can be bought on 11 November from 2pm to 3pm.

For daily metro commuters this means an extra screening step at the station entrance, so planning for quick checks will matter once the system starts.

The report is from Dhaka Tribune's Tribune Desk.
