Summer vegetables have risen by Tk 10 to 20 a kilogram in the capital's kitchen markets over the past week. Supply is good, but every vegetable costs more; chicken and fish, by contrast, are selling at last week's prices.

At the Taltola and Agargaon markets on Friday, 11 September, brinjal was up Tk 20 at Tk 100 to 140 a kilo, tomato Tk 120 to 140 and bitter gourd Tk 60 to 80. Pointed gourd, okra, teasel gourd and ridge gourd were Tk 60 to 80 depending on quality, papaya Tk 30, potato Tk 30 and onion Tk 45 to 50.

Taro stolon was Tk 60 to 70, taro corm Tk 50 to 60, cucumber Tk 60 to 70, yardlong bean Tk 80, carrot Tk 120 and sweet pumpkin Tk 40 a kilo. Lemons were Tk 20 to 30 for four, local coriander Tk 300 and hybrid coriander Tk 240 a kilo, green bananas Tk 40 for four, ash gourd Tk 50 to 60 apiece and capsicum Tk 350 a kilo. Among leafy greens, red amaranth was Tk 15 a bunch, bottle gourd leaves Tk 50, water spinach Tk 20 for two bunches, Malabar spinach Tk 40 and stem amaranth Tk 40 for two bunches.

In the chicken market, Sonali cock sold for Tk 320, Sonali hybrid Tk 290, red layer Tk 350 and native chicken Tk 700 a kilo; broiler was down Tk 10 at Tk 180. Beef was Tk 780 to 800 and mutton Tk 1,300 a kilo. Red eggs were Tk 150 a dozen and duck eggs Tk 200; native chicken eggs Tk 100 for four and Sonali cock eggs Tk 70 for four.

Hilsa was unchanged: 300-gram fish at Tk 1,100 to 1,200 a kilo, 500 to 700 grams at Tk 1,890 to 2,000 and one-kilogram fish at Tk 2,700 to 2,800. Farmed shing was Tk 300 to 600 by size and native shing Tk 1,200 to 1,400; rui rose to Tk 400 to 550, native magur Tk 900 to 1,200, mrigal Tk 350 to 450, farmed pangas Tk 180 to 200, prawn Tk 800 to 1,400, boal Tk 600 to 800, large katla Tk 400 to 550, poa Tk 350 to 400, pabda Tk 400 to 450, tilapia Tk 240, koi Tk 220 to 230, mola Tk 500, batasi tengra Tk 1,400, tengra Tk 500 to 800, kachki Tk 500 and mixed small fish Tk 240 a kilo.

The summer vegetable season is winding down and winter crops are still in the field — the turn of the seasons when prices rise every year. For growers it is the moment early winter vegetables pay; for consumers, a few weeks of higher bills.
