Indonesia's state investment agency Danantara is building a "Hajj Village" in the Thakher area of Makkah to house and serve Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. It has bought 4.4 hectares for the project, in a purchase completed on 18 October.
Rosan Roeslani, Danantara's chief executive and Indonesia's investment minister, said after a cabinet meeting in Jakarta on 3 November that President Prabowo Subianto had been briefed. Architects will soon present full designs, with a groundbreaking or the start of construction targeted for December.
The site will combine hotels and lodging with retail and support services for pilgrims. It will be built in phases with the Saudi development firm Al-Khomasiah.
On 11 August, Danantara acquired the 1,461-room Novotel Thakher Makkah in the same area. It plans to use the land and the hotel together as one lodging and service system.
The agency says each phase will first go through feasibility studies, approvals and government clearances. Roeslani said pilgrims from other countries could also use the services in future.
