When angels came down to hear Usaid ibn Hudayr recite the Quran

Sahih al-Bukhari records how the Companion Usaid recited Surah Al-Baqarah at night and saw a canopy of lights, which the Prophet explained as angels drawn to the recitation.

One night in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Usaid ibn Hudayr, a Companion of the Ansar, sat near his horse's stable reciting Surah Al-Baqarah with his young son Yahya lying close by. The account is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (hadith 5018).

As he recited, the horse began to leap. It calmed when he stopped and grew restless when he resumed. When this happened a third time, he feared it would trample his son, so he stopped and went to the boy.

Looking up, he saw something like a canopy above him, with lights like lamps inside it. As he watched, it rose and vanished from sight.

In the morning he told the Prophet everything. The Prophet said, "You should have kept reciting." Usaid explained that he had stopped for his son's safety. In the narration, the Prophet said they would have stayed until dawn if he had gone on, and people would have seen them.

Writing in Prothom Alo, Nahida Sultana presents the event as clear evidence that angels gather to hear the Quran recited.
