Chuadanga agricultural entrepreneur Shakhawat Hossain Babul has built a large orchard of sweet malta. The 40-bigha orchard has produced a heavy crop this year, and the entrepreneur and experts say it is the largest in the country so far.
Beside the Moragang
Chuadanga, rich in fruits and crops, still shows the timeless landscape of rural Bengal. The Moragang at Hogoldanga in Damurhuda upazila looks like a painting, and the country's largest malta orchard lies on its bank.
Four thousand trees
On 40 bighas, 4,000 malta trees are so laden that the fruit seems to outnumber the leaves. Last year the orchard gave 150 maunds of malta, and this year it is giving more. Green malta with leaves attached is sent to market, and people get the taste of completely chemical-free local fruit.
The orchard of BARI Malta-1 receives technical support from the government's project on nutrition improvement through year-round fruit production. Its natural beauty suggests it could also become a place for agritourism.
