Radiotherapy machines are to be installed quickly in the country's cancer hospitals, health and family welfare minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said. Delays in installing and starting modern cancer equipment will be ended, he said, and with the prime minister's help steps will be taken to make imports of such equipment duty-free.
The minister was chief guest at a discussion of the National Cancer Conference 2026 at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka, on Monday. The session's theme was 'Cancer care for all: coordinating prevention, precise treatment, palliative care and policy'.
Most of the health sector's budget is planned for cancer treatment, the minister said, and once radiotherapy machines are in place patients will get modern treatment at home. The staff and technologists to run them are in the country, he said, and if needed they will be trained within the next three months so the new technology is used to the full.
He also warned that negligence will no longer be tolerated and that those who neglect their duties will lose their jobs.
Prof. Dr Mostafa Aziz Sumon, director of the institute, presided. Prof. Dr Zahid Raihan, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, and Md Khalequzzaman Chowdhury, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, also attended.
