Research has found that a good-quality, nutritious breakfast plays a positive role in raising performance through the day, and even in improving how well the brain works.
A report on Well+Good, citing a 2021 study in the journal Nutrients, said teenagers who eat a nutritious breakfast show better brain function than others.
A small 2016 study published in Neuroscience and Medical found that adults' brains stay more active when they eat a nutritious breakfast instead of high-sugar food.
A 2021 report in the journal Psychophysiology found that skipping breakfast can cause temporary memory lapses and a lack of concentration.
Maggie Moon, a US nutritionist and author of The MIND Diet, said: "Better brain and cognitive function depends not only on breakfast but on everything you eat and drink through the week."
Breakfast foods that help the brain
Here are some breakfast foods that are good for the brain.
- Eggs: eggs are good for brain health. "Eggs are easy to cook and contain choline and lutein. Both help brain development in children and help prevent cognitive decline in middle age," said Moon. This was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2018.
- Oatmeal: many nutritionists recommend oatmeal or oats for breakfast.
