Brazil has found a second outbreak of Newcastle disease in Santa Catarina state, at a poultry farm in Coronel Freitas, the Agriculture Ministry said late on Sunday, The Poultry Site reports, citing Reuters.
The new case lies inside an area already under restriction, so the containment zone needed only a small adjustment, the ministry said. The first case was reported last week at a turkey farm in the nearby town of Nova Itaberaba; it was Brazil's first Newcastle disease case since 2024.
Sanitary depopulation of the birds on the affected farm has begun, together with an epidemiological investigation and containment measures, the government said.
The stakes are high for trade. Santa Catarina accounts for around 15 percent of poultry production in Brazil, the world's largest exporter of chicken meat. China and Saudi Arabia halted poultry imports from the state last week, and Mexico imposed a nationwide ban on Brazilian poultry.
