A new kind of Internet of Things (IoT) use has begun in Bangladesh's livestock sector, Shykh Seraj reports. The technology, recognised by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the German Agricultural Society (DLG), is being brought to farms by Surjomukhi Prani Sheba.

This time the new ICT device is not placed on the cow's shoulder or ear but in its stomach. A capsule-shaped device called a "bolus" can report all of the cow's health information every moment from inside the stomach for six years, and the farm owner can see it from anywhere through a mobile app.

Farm entrepreneur Asaduzzaman Afsar of Rupganj, Narayanganj, has started to see remarkable benefits from using the technology.

Surjomukhi Prani Sheba, which brought the technology to Bangladesh, has built an integrated platform for implementing it, working with Phoenix Insurance to offer livestock insurance alongside the technology service. However, the first farmer to use it says the service needs to become more affordable in the interest of all kinds of farmers.
