As a pledge to protect the environment, the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) held a tree-planting programme. Several hundred fruit, timber and medicinal trees were planted on the United Medical College premises on Madani Avenue in the capital and along both sides of the adjoining road.

BARVIDA also planted a number of rare trees as part of planned afforestation, according to a press release sent by the association on Saturday (2 August). The nature and environment organisation Tarupallab gave technical support to the programme.

BARVIDA president Abdul Haque, secretary general Riaz Rahman, joint secretary general Syed Zaglul Hossain and organising secretary Zobayer Rahman took part. The association's planning and development secretary S M Monsurul Kabir (Linkon) and cultural secretary Md Golam Rabbani (Shanto) were present.

Tarupallab general secretary Mokarram Hossain attended and planted trees, and other Tarupallab leaders were also present, along with representatives of United Medical College and United Group.

The release said that for more than four decades BARVIDA has played an important part in developing the country's transport sector by importing and marketing environment-friendly reconditioned cars with Japan's latest technology. It said BARVIDA is also committed to fulfilling its social responsibility by planting trees for carbon absorption and to maintain the natural balance.

BARVIDA executive members Punam Sharmin Jhilmil, Benzir Ahmed and Md Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan were present, and general members of the association also took part.
