Volunteers clear two kilometres of Uzirpur canal, officer pulled from the mud

More than a hundred volunteers and the upazila administration in Barishal's Uzirpur spent five hours clearing a canal whose flow had been blocked by rubbish.

More than a hundred volunteers spent five hours on Friday clearing a canal about two kilometres long beside the Uzirpur upazila complex in Barishal. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ali Suja joined them in the water for the drive, which ran from 9am to 2pm.

They pulled out water hyacinth, plastic bottles, polythene and other waste that had built up for a long time. The volunteer group BD Clean Barishal and local young people worked alongside the upazila administration.

At one point the officer got stuck in the mud. Volunteers pulled him out and he went back to work a little later. A video of the moment then spread on social media.

Ali Suja said plastic bottles, polythene and other rubbish thrown in by people living along the banks had stopped the canal's flow completely. If people act themselves instead of waiting for a government allocation, he said, many of society's problems can be solved.

Zahed Irfan, divisional coordinator of BD Clean, said the clean-up followed the officer's call. According to Ittefaq, the canal slowly began to return to its normal state during the drive.
