New technologies are making farming easier and more profitable, and aquaponics is one of them. Because of water shortages, farming with aquaponics technology can be very profitable, saving about 90 percent of water.

Aquaponics needs less space and less water. Two tanks are prepared: fish are raised in one, and vegetables are grown on a floating board in the other. The two tanks are connected with pipes.

• Seedlings are first raised in a small tray and then placed on the floating board.
• Fish waste raises the ammonia level in the fish tank, and this water is moved to the vegetable tank.
• The plants absorb the nutrients they need from the water.
• The water is then returned to the fish tank, and the cycle repeats.

Vegetables grown with aquaponics need no pesticide or fertiliser, because plants get their food from the water. The method conserves a great deal of water, and because it does not depend on the local climate or environment, farmers do not need to worry much about where to set it up. The technology is very useful for farmers, the report says, as it can easily double their profits.
