The rational use of antibiotics in fisheries and livestock must be ensured, Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, minister for agriculture and for fisheries and livestock, has said. Antibiotic residues entering the human body through food are raising the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), he said, and young officers must play an effective part in curbing it.

He was speaking on Sunday in the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at an event for officers newly joined to the fisheries and livestock cadres of the 45th BCS. Safe food production, he said, means making safe not only the fish, meat, milk and eggs but also the inputs used to produce them.

Urging the new officers to work with honesty, dedication and professionalism, the minister noted that a government officer's career lasts about 25 to 32 years, giving them a long time to shape and carry out policy.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku told them to prove their skill and ability at work and to follow the law and the rules, carrying out their duties ethically as the state expects.

Ministry secretary Md Delwar Hossain, Department of Livestock Services director general Md Shahjaman Khan and Department of Fisheries director general Dr Md Khaled Konok were among senior officials present. Twenty-five new fisheries cadre officers and 21 new livestock cadre officers attended.

These officers are the ones who will see in the field how antibiotics are used on farms and in fish enclosures. The report is by a Daily Bangladesh staff reporter.
