Alltech links rapid mycotoxin strips to its RAPIREAD risk platform

A partnership with ProGnosis Biotech will feed test results into digital risk analysis for feed makers and livestock farms, starting in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Alltech has formed a partnership with ProGnosis Biotech to speed up mycotoxin testing for feed manufacturers and livestock producers and to turn the results into risk advice. The first phase will concentrate on Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which the companies say are seeing growing mycotoxin problems.

Mycotoxins are toxins made by certain moulds that can contaminate crops and feed ingredients. They can affect animal health and performance and cause economic losses for farms and feed businesses. Drought, extreme heat and heavy rainfall can favour mould growth and toxin production, the announcement says, which makes testing more important.

Under the alliance, results from ProGnosis tests will be connected to Alltech's RAPIREAD platform, so users receive an interpretation and a risk analysis as well as a reading. ProGnosis supplies rapid lateral flow test strips and readers designed to give quick results along the supply chain.

"Alltech RAPIREAD allows users to understand their true mycotoxin risk as it relates to animal performance and health," said Dr Alexandra Weaver of Alltech's global technical support team.

Sebastien Poisson, business development manager at ProGnosis, said the integration combines rapid testing with automated trend and risk analysis.

For a farmer or feed mill the practical aim is time: fast and local information lets a business respond when contamination is found, from the choice of ingredients to the feeding plan, before the problem grows. The companies say lessons from the first phase may support expansion into other regions.
