Residents of Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga have intercepted a truck that was carrying 440 sacks of TSP fertiliser, allocated from a Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) godown, out of the area. Police later took the truck and its load into custody.

The incident took place on Sunday morning, 13 September, at Chitla Bazar on the Hatboalia road. Police from the Hapania camp reached the spot after being alerted.

Police and residents said a large quantity of government fertiliser was being moved without valid documents, and locals stopped the truck (Jhenaidah Ta-11-1145) when they grew suspicious. The delivery note listed TSP fertiliser and the quantity in handwriting, but the details did not match the seized fertiliser, the truck's destination or the people involved.

The fertiliser belongs to Minarul Islam, a grocery trader from Bhangbaria union in the upazila. He said the sacks were being brought by truck from Nowapara in Jashore because he had been unable to supply the union's farmers according to demand.

Alamdanga upazila agriculture officer Masud Hossain Palash said Minarul Islam, accused of involvement in fertiliser diversion, has been kept in police custody along with the seized fertiliser and the truck driver, and a decision on the next step is being taken.

With demand for TSP rising ahead of the rabi season, fertiliser allocated to one area leaving it strains the supply local farmers are due — which is why villagers themselves moved to stop the truck.
