Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid has said there is no fertiliser crisis in the country. A racket, he said, is trying to hoard fertiliser to create an artificial shortage, and action is being taken against it.

The minister was speaking to journalists at Fulgazi in Feni at noon on Saturday, 12 September. He had gone there to inspect preparations and the overall situation ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Feni on 17 September.

There is adequate fertiliser in stock, Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said, so farmers have no reason to worry. Anyone who attempts to stockpile fertiliser to manufacture a crisis will face action.

In a first phase, 110,000 farmer cards will be distributed across the country to support farmers, the minister said; 7,500 farmers in Feni will receive them. The Prime Minister is to formally launch the card distribution in Feni on 17 September.

Earlier the minister visited the venue of the Prime Minister's rally at Fulgazi and took stock of the arrangements. Deputy Commissioner Mahbub Ul Karim, Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar and Department of Agricultural Extension deputy director Atik Ullah were among the officials present.

The remarks come amid concern among farmers about fertiliser supply. A farmer card, once in use, would make it easier to identify who is entitled to subsidised fertiliser and incentives when they are handed out.
