Afghanistan's 35th agriculture and livestock exhibition opened in Kabul on 4 November at the Badam Bagh research farm and runs for four days, to 7 November. It has 263 stalls this year, under the slogan "Sustainable agriculture and livestock, more production, a stronger economy".

The exhibition is meant to promote domestic farm and livestock products, support farmers and herders, widen the market for Afghan goods and connect producers with traders.

Opening it, Maulana Ataullah Omari, the minister of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, said proper use of water, soil, a favourable climate and human resources could carry Afghanistan towards food self-sufficiency. His ministry, he said, is working on product standards and on replacing traditional methods with modern production.

A message from the prime minister's office stressed distribution of better seed, control of crop diseases and pests, and better quality in farm produce.

Khan Mohammad Frotan, head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, said that with this potential put to use the country could move from relying on imports to exporting. Alireza Bigdeli, acting head of Iran's embassy in Kabul, said Iran is interested in buying whatever Afghan produce it needs.

Exhibitors stressed the need for a proper market for domestic farm products. The report draws on Tolo News and Insaf.
