BASF and IRRI extend OPTIMA Rice, turning from methane cuts to soil health
The first phase of the BASF–IRRI collaboration launched in 2024 showed that alternate wetting and drying, enabled through direct-seeded rice, cuts methane and water use without losing yield; the next phase looks at soil carbon and nitrogen and at biochar, with Philippine trials meant to inform China
