Worrying about the future: what Islam teaches about trust in Allah

A hadith in Tirmidhi says that Allah enriches the heart of one whose concern is the hereafter, while one whose only concern is this world finds his affairs in disarray.

Amid competition and economic uncertainty, excessive anxiety about the future has become one of the great mental burdens of modern life. Chasing livelihoods, careers and material security, many people lose their balance of mind, and some abandon principles and ethics.

In Islam's view, a believer's thoughts should not be confined to this world alone. Spending all one's energy on material gain while forgetting to prepare for the hereafter destroys peace of heart.

In a narration in Tirmidhi, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever makes the hereafter his only concern, Allah will place richness in his heart and put his affairs in order, and the world will come to him humbled; but whoever makes this world his only concern will have poverty set before his eyes, his affairs will be scattered, and he will get nothing beyond what is decreed for him.
