Wildlife officers raided Dhelapir Haat in Saidpur, Nilphamari, on Friday afternoon (6 November) and rescued 22 native birds: 10 parakeets, five lesser whistling ducks, six spotted doves and one swamphen. The birds were then released into their natural surroundings.

Four iron cages were seized, and those involved signed an undertaking not to repeat the offence. Wildlife inspector Md Jahangir Kabir of the Rajshahi wildlife management and nature conservation region led the drive, helped by the Setubandhan Youth Development Organisation.

"The natural home of a bird is nature, not a cage," Kabir said. He said catching, caging or trading wild birds harms biodiversity, that the raid followed reports of native birds being sold at the market, and that such drives will continue.

The group's president Alamgir Hossain and organising secretary Noushad Ansari said some people catch wild birds to sell at market, and they will keep raising awareness so that people stop hunting and trading them.
