Watermelon is now plentiful in the market, and almost everyone enjoys this juicy fruit. But is eating it every day good for health, or does it risk weight gain? Here is what experts say.
Watermelon is very good for health. It contains vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium, and its high water content helps make up for water shortage in the body. Its vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids and lycopene also protect the body from several complex illnesses, and it benefits the heart, eyes and other organs.
Does watermelon cause weight gain?
Dr Aritra Khan, chief nutritionist at a private hospital in Kolkata, India, says watermelon is a low-calorie food, so eating it carries no risk of weight gain. Eaten in a set amount, it can even help shed fat.
However, many people drink watermelon juice, some with added sugar. This raises the calories and can help put on weight. So if you want to control your weight, chew the fruit rather than juicing it.
Can people with diabetes eat it?
The expert says many people with diabetes avoid watermelon because it is sweet. But those whose diabetes is under control can eat four or five pieces a day. Although its glycaemic index is high, it is below 10, and for that reason the fruit does not raise sugar much. People with diabetes can eat watermelon as advised by a nutritionist.
How much to eat each day
About 200 grams of fruit can be eaten a day, and 100-150 grams of that as watermelon should cause little problem. Those with kidney disease should consult a specialist before eating it.
