Based on the idea of farm markets in developed countries, the country's first produce market with state-of-the-art technology and facilities, the "Village Super Market", has been built in Dumuria, Khulna. Those involved hope it will end farmers' long deprivation.
A market for farmers
For generations, farmers' dreams have stumbled at the market. Facing the long domination of middlemen, farmers have always wanted a market where their decisions count and produce does not change hands again and again.
"SaFaL", a project of the Netherlands-based international organisation Solidaridad, has shown farmers in coastal districts a way to end that deprivation. The Village Super Market, a new centre of service for farmers, is the culmination of that work, modelled on the world's most modern produce markets.
Built-in services
The market has planned facilities for protecting product quality, grading, storage, improved packaging and marketing. The owners of the super market also hope it will close many gaps. A second Village Super Market of the same size and design has been built in Jashore.
