Internships have begun for 179 students of the DVM 60th batch of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), 35 of whom are doing theirs abroad — 16 in Malaysia, 12 in Thailand, 4 in Japan and 3 in Nepal. The faculty's 23rd internship programme was inaugurated on the morning of Saturday, 19 September, in the university's Syed Nazrul Islam conference room.

At the same ceremony, eight students of the DVM 59th batch (2019-20 session) with the best CGPAs received the Academic Award 2026: Nurun Laila Shaon, Sabrina Yasmin Nupur, Fahmida Sultana Jonaki, Afsana Mimi, Akhi Akter Shila, Nawrin Jannat, Md Morsalin and Salma Khatun.

Chief guest Professor Masuma Habib, a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), said the government plans to bring 100,000 students a year — 500,000 over the next five years — into internships to build creativity, problem-solving and communication skills. Noting that BAU's location outside Dhaka often leaves it short of opportunities open to other universities, she called for closer coordination between education, industry and academia.

BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Rafiqul Islam Sarder, the programme's chief patron, said it was a matter of pride that internships now run in every faculty of the university; UGC funding is not easy to secure, he said, yet the programme is running successfully. He promised steps to solve the accommodation problems of women students on internship and urged the interns to learn their work diligently and uphold the university's reputation.

Presiding, Professor Md Bahanur Rahman, dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and convener of the deans' council, told the students that the time had come to put knowledge earned with public money to use — to think about how to serve farmers and livestock keepers and how to make themselves skilled and capable.

Professor G M Mujibar Rahman, dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and student affairs adviser, was special guest. A large share of field-level veterinary care in Bangladesh's livestock and poultry sectors passes through DVM graduates, which makes the internship year the profession's preparation for the farm gate.
