A schoolteacher named Md Abu Jafar (35) is winning praise for planting a paddy field in the shape of the national flag in Ulipur, Kurigram. Abu Jafar is the son of Md Abu Bakkar of Naodanga Bakerhat village in Ulipur municipal town, and an assistant teacher at Ulipur Model Primary School.
In the month of independence, curious crowds are gathering to see the image of the national flag brought out with seedlings in the middle of the paddy field.
A visit found that Abu Jafar has grown paddy on one acre and thirty decimals of land, and across one decimal of the field he has created the image of the flag. He planted purple rice seedlings along the side of the field's ridge to form the flagpole. He planted green seedlings of the BRRI-104 variety for the body of the flag, and zinc-enriched purple rice seedlings in rows for the circle and the flagpole.
Flag now clearly visible
At first the picture was not clear because the leaves had not taken on their full colour, but as the plants have matured the flag has become visible. People are coming every day to see the unusual field.
Abu Jafar said: "I farm alongside teaching. People want to present themselves in different ways to express their love and affection for the country. I was simply trying the same. Now that the field in the shape of the national flag has become visible in the month of independence, people are more interested in seeing it."
Md Monowarul Islam, who came to see the field, said people mainly do unusual things out of love and respect for the country. "Abu Jafar bhai's paddy field in the shape of the national flag is truly praiseworthy. I am charmed to see such a sight." He said seeing it would awaken patriotism in many people.
Biplob Kumar Mohanta, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Kurigram, said the crop art in the shape of the national flag, created by a farmer as a sign of his love for the country, truly deserves praise. The agriculture department will always stand by farmers with advice and help, he said.
