Turkey is a new addition to Bangladesh's poultry family. In many places, hobby farmers have set up farms of this large bird with quality meat and are achieving remarkable success in a short time. One such farm is in Ashulia, Savar.
From hobby to business
The turkey is a colourful, meaty bird, lively and affectionate, that enriches a farm with its own qualities. Amir Hossain Sarkar of Dosaid village, Ashulia, started raising turkeys as a hobby with just 21 chicks. Within a year he became a commercial farmer.
A hatchery of his own
His farm now has several common and less common turkey breeds. Because neither eggs nor day-old chicks are easy to find, he has also built a small hatchery, along with a small structure for rearing and marketing turkeys. Following his example, many others are now interested in turkey farming.
