There is no alternative to healthy food for keeping the body well. Yet many people are drawn to eating out, which is raising the risk of various diseases. There are also many health-conscious people who are used to nutritious food. This year people have become at least a little more health-conscious, and so have turned away from junk food towards healthier eating.

Some superfoods have won praise for providing the body with necessary nutrients and health benefits even when eaten in small amounts. Based on several studies and dietitian surveys, here is a selection of some of the trending superfoods of 2024.

Fermented foods

Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which help maintain a healthy balance in the gut. They improve digestion, which also helps boost immunity.

In 2024, fermented foods such as kimchi, kefir and sauerkraut topped the list. These foods are rich in probiotics, can boost immunity and may even improve mental health.

Mushrooms and lentils

Many people love mushrooms, which contain vitamins D and B, selenium and antioxidants. As mushrooms have grown more popular, they are used not only in curries but also mixed into other dishes, such as pizza and burgers.

Lentils, chickpeas and other pulses are high in protein and fibre. Eating pulses regularly makes up for protein shortfalls in the body and keeps you feeling full for longer.

Papaya and green tea

Papaya is a superfood full of vitamin C and antioxidants, and rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium. Eating papaya improves digestion, boosts immunity and even helps protect against some diseases.

Green tea contains plenty of antioxidants. Drinking green tea regularly helps us lose weight and lowers the risk of diseases such as diabetes. It also protects against heart disease and cancer. How much green tea to drink a day depends on the person and their own health.
