Ripe mangoes have only just started to reach the market. The mango is a highly nutritious and delicious fruit, which is why it is called the king of fruits. Many people are now buying mangoes, but a yellow or reddish skin does not mean the fruit is ripe and sweet.
Many dishonest traders sell mangoes treated with formalin as ripe fruit, so you need to be careful when buying. Here are some ways to make sure you buy sweet, ripe mangoes at the market.
Look around the stalk
When buying a mango, look carefully at the stalk end. If it is firm around the stalk and the rest of the fruit is slightly soft, it is a fully ripe, fresh and sweet mango.
Press the mango
Most people press mangoes when buying them and still pick the wrong ones. When you press, make sure the mango is not too hard or pale. Choose a soft mango.
Smell the mango
This way of spotting ripe, sweet mangoes is many years old. Naturally ripened, sweet fruit smells very fresh, so smell the mango when buying it; if it is ripe you will notice a light, sweet scent.
However fresh and sweet a mango seems, do not buy it if it has any hole or cut. Also avoid buying mangoes that have a strange smell.
