A one-and-a-half-year-old girl named Rafia Khan has died of a snakebite in Shibchar, Madaripur. The incident happened on Monday (10 April) night in Guagachhia village near Nayabazar in Duttapara union of the upazila.

According to local and family sources, Rafia, daughter of Rakib Khan of the village, was sitting on the steps of the house with her legs dangling at around 8pm on Monday. When she screamed, family members rushed over and saw a snake slipping away beneath the steps and bite marks on her leg. Shortly afterwards she began vomiting. The family rushed her to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty told them to take her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but she died on the way to Dhaka that night.

Her father, Rakib Khan, said: "The snake bit my daughter's leg just after she sat on the step in front of the door. We could not save my only daughter."
