Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) has opened a 'Plant Health Clinic' to diagnose crop diseases and advise farmers. Vice-chancellor Professor Muhammad Shafi Ullah Majumder opened the clinic in the university's Department of Plant Pathology and Seed Science on Wednesday 14 October.

The organisers said the clinic was set up under a sub-project of the University Grants Commission's Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project, funded by the World Bank and the government of Bangladesh. Its job is to identify crop diseases, give farmers advice and bring university researchers closer to farmers in the field.

The vice-chancellor said Bangladesh's food security depends heavily on keeping crops healthy and free of disease, and that diagnosing disease in time and giving farmers the right advice can prevent a large share of crop losses. The clinic, he said, would be a bridge between researchers and farmers, help with environmentally friendly control of diseases and pests, and give students hands-on research experience.

Department teacher Md Asad-ud-Daula presided. Treasurer A T M Mahbub-e-Elahi and Faculty of Agriculture dean Md Shahidul Islam were special guests, and sub-project manager and department chairman Md Monirul Islam gave the welcome address.

Farmers in the Sylhet region who find an unfamiliar disease or pest in their crops can now take it to the university's clinic for advice. The report is from the Agricare24 desk.
