Sajna dal is a unique dish with the scent of the village and the taste of home. It is made with simple ingredients but its flavour is quite distinct, and with thick sajna dal and hot rice nothing else is needed. When fresh drumsticks are in season, this dish is a must.
Ingredients
- Drumsticks (sajna): half a kg
- Lentils: 250g
- Oil: 3-4 tablespoons
- Chopped onions: 2
- Chopped garlic: 2
- Green chillies, slit: 4-5
- Turmeric powder: half a teaspoon
- Chilli powder: half a teaspoon
- Coriander powder: half a teaspoon
- Cumin powder: half a teaspoon
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
Method
First cut the drumsticks into pieces and wash them well. Wash the lentils in clean water too.
Heat oil in a pan and fry the chopped onion and garlic until light brown. When the onion becomes fragrant, mix the turmeric, chilli, coriander and cumin powders with a little water and pour into the pan. Fry the spices well over a medium flame.
Now add the cut drumsticks and keep stirring and frying them with the spices. After a few minutes, add the washed lentils and fry again for a while. Then add salt, water and green chillies and cover. Cook over a medium flame until the lentils and drumsticks are soft.
When the dal has thickened, take it off the heat and serve with hot rice. If you like, sprinkle a little ghee or roasted cumin powder on top at the end to boost both flavour and aroma.
